Artist statement

I design patterns that tell small stories. My work grows from the great decorative traditions, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Art Deco and mid-century modern, which I admire for their discipline: a clear structure, a confident line, ornament with a purpose.

Inside that discipline I like to leave room for a smile. A cat unrolling a ribbon that turns out to be toilet paper. A leopard curled up for a catnap among Arts & Crafts foliage. The humor is never loud. It waits in the repeat for the second look, so a room can stay calm and elegant while still having something to say.

A surface pattern has no edges and no center, and it only comes alive when it meets a wall, a sofa or a curtain. That is why I draw with the room in mind, testing scale, rhythm and color until the pattern feels at home.

Each pattern is drawn to bring quiet joy to the rooms you love most.

Collections

Designed to be used together

Each collection pairs a lead pattern with coordinates and quiet blenders that share one palette, so a whole room can be dressed in wallpaper, upholstery and soft furnishings.

About

Mia Valdez

Wallpaper and fabric designer based in Spain. Since 2014 I have created patterns sold worldwide through Spoonflower and HappyWall, drawing by hand and working in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

My practice sits between illustration and interior design. I build each design as a coordinated collection, a lead pattern with its stripes and small-scale blenders, so that designers and homeowners can dress a whole room around one story. Most of my patterns begin as small pencil sketches of everyday scenes, which I redraw as vector art and build into seamless repeats.

I love the discipline of the great decorative styles, and I always leave a little room for a smile.
